Updates for ALATA Members from the President

ALATA members,

I certainly hope that you are having a great start to your fall sports seasons. A few things I would like to let you know about.

1. The 2016-17 high school athletic trainer contact list is available. If you did not receive it then you can email me and I will send it to you. A special thanks to all ATs that had a role in completing it. It is the most complete list that we have ever had. Please use it to communicate with other ATs. It is a great asset.

2. The flooding in Louisiana is a dire situation. I want you all to know that ALATA is playing a part in the recovery and rebuilding. There were 12 ATs that have suffered severe damage or even lost their homes. Many are still in shelters. Each of the state associations of SEATA have agreed to "adopt athletic trainers" that need help. Alabama has adopted 2 and we have already sent funds to help them out. Please keep everyone that has been affected by this disaster in your prayers and continue being generous through your giving.

3. Election deadline for nominations are September 12th, with the election immediately afterwards. We would love to have too many wanting to get involved. Nominations have to be made by a member and the nominees must be in good standing for 2 years. Jump on board, we need you.

4. Clarification on the AHSAA Section 27 of the By Laws rule on IV fluid uses. An athlete requiring intravenous fluid treatment (hydration/rehydration) will not be allowed to participate in any athletic activity until cleared by a medical doctor and approved by the parents or guardian. A direct verbal or written order from a medical doctor is required.

5. AHSAA Pre-participation Athletic Physicals must be signed by an MD or a DO only. A Nurse Practitioner or PA can not. This is happening more and more from the "after hours clinics" across the state. Please share this with your coaches.

6. One last reminder, please remember to go and meet with your fellow ATs before games. Introduce yourselves and go over your EAPs. You might even use the AT list to contact each other early in the week to do this before the game. A little extra effort goes a long way in caring for our patients and building better professional relationships.

Thank you and have a great season and please contact myself or any of us at ALATA if we can be of any service to you.
