Letter from ALATA President, John W. Morr

I hope that the spring season has gone very well for each of you and that the summer months ahead provide you with the time to catch up on all of those tasks you wish to accomplish, as well as some time with your family and friends.

The annual ALATA symposium was held May 12-15, 2011 and for my first meeting as the President, I was very pleased with the educational aspect of the program.  Karen Straub Stanton did a remarkable job as the meeting planner and please send her a note of thanks for all of her hard work.  I would like to recognize our scholarship winners this year, Heather Elliott from The University of Alabama received the Undergraduate Scholarship award and Stasia Burroughs from Auburn University received the Graduate Scholarship award.  I am very privileged to know both of these young ladies and both are well deserving of these scholarships.

I wish to recognize the following award winners as well, Ed Harris for the Clinical award, Rob Hudson for the High School award, Dr. Amanda Andrews Benson for the College/University award, Karen Straub Stanton for the Merit award, Dr. Angus McBryde for the Sportsmedicine person of the year and Rodney Brown for the Hall of Fame induction.  Each of these individuals are deserving of the awards for the sacrifices they have made over the years to our profession.  Thank you and congratulations.  The amendments proposed to the ALATA Constitution and ALATA bylaws were voted on and passed.  Those documents are on the website for your general information.  Also, the call for nominations to the following positions, President-elect, Vice President, Treasurer, and also 2 at large positions (1 and 3) have been open and will close on June 30th.  Voting will begin July 1 and closes on July 31st.  Another item to address is a proposed change in the NATA by-law to allow associate members who are licensed in their respective state the right to vote on NATA matters.  I will need to vote on whether to oppose or accept this bylaw at the NATA business meeting in June and I appreciate your thoughts on this particular matter.

Congratulations on the elections of Brad Montgomery and John "Doc" Anderson to the Board of Athletic Training.  I know that they will continue the outstanding work the Board does for all of us in this state.

I appreciated having the time to discuss with the attendees our vision for the upcoming years.  It is time for all of us to step up and get involved.  A part of what we have done is to initiate a program for the high school/clinical ATC.  Our first venture was successful in Huntsville on April 10th.  Michael Stevenson coordinated the one day seminar doing a fantastic job and we look forward to continuing this program throughout the state.

House Bill 108 has passed through the House and Senate and delivered to Governor Bentley on June 2, 2011 for his signature.  This bill pertains to concussions of athletes and return to play requirements.  If you are not familiar with the bill, please visit and click on the link in the text "Legislation, Code and Constitution" to access this bill.

I would like everyone to keep the family of Kevin Uhler in your thoughts and prayers since his passing on May 5, 2011.  Donations may be made to Sacred Heart School or Sacred Heart Church217 Second St. SE, Cullman, AL  35055.

Please mark this date in your calendar for next year’s ALATA meeting, May 17-20, 2012.  We will have another excellent educational meeting.  The Hall of Fame Banquet will be on Saturday evening and we hope that you will make the time to attend as we recognize the inductees from 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Thank you for your continued support and efforts as the Executive Council proceeds throughout the coming year.  My charge to each of you reading this is to get involved and get other Athletic Trainers involved in the professional development within the State of Alabama.
