From ALATA President, Heloise Belarmino

Dear ALATA Membership,

For the last three years we as an Association have proposed legislation in Montgomery to benefit and protect athletic trainers in this state.  Since the adoption of our Practice Act in the early 1990’s we as a state have not made any amendments in our practice act.

Times have clearly changed in our profession and so have the demands and work settings of our profession not just at the state level but nationally as well.  With these changes it would be impractical for us as Allied Healthcare Professionals to maintain our current Practice Act.  The current proposed legislation (SB 454) makes the necessary amendments to accommodate our ever growing profession.

Despite what opposition forces lead the public to believe, we are and always will be highly qualified healthcare professionals trained and skilled in prevention, rehabilitation, recognition and evaluation just to name a few of our domains recognized by our own governing board, the Board of Certification.  No matter what setting we may practice in, traditional or non-traditional; co-morbidities or without it is time our opposition realize that we are educated and skilled to perform these jobs.  It is also time for our elected officials to realize the importance of our roles in the communities, and that we take our profession seriously.  Our elected officials must be educated in the field of athletic training and the domains that we are educated in.  If our opposition truly believe that we as athletic trainers’ should only deal with “healthy” athletic populations; then they must ask themselves why they feel that we are encroaching on their territory. Of which we are not, we simply want to be treated and respected as healthcare professionals that we are.

Therefore, I charge each of you as practicing athletic trainers in this state to stand up for your profession, protect your profession and be heard by your elected officials.  We MUST take a stand and the time is NOW.  Please see the link below to read SB 454 if you have not done so already.  Make contact via e-mail, telephone or personal visit to your local Senators.  We have taken care of their family members, whether it be a son or daughter, a spouse, or relative and we will continue to take care of them.  Please understand the urgency and importance of this Bill.  Thank you for your continued support and should you have any questions regarding the Bill please do not hesitate to contact me at 205-914-9676.

Go to www.alata.org/eb/SB454AthleticTraining.pdf to read the bill.

Sincerely,
Heloise Belarmino, MAE, ATC, LAT
President
