Presidential Address

January 23, 2007

Dear ALATA Members,

I would like to wish each and every one of you a Happy and Prosperous New Year.  I know 2006 was an eventful one for me personally and I hope and look forward to serving the membership in 2007 as your newly elected president.

I believe that our membership is represented by the finest in our state with Mike Jones, Vice President; Jamie Gamber, Secretary; and our newest addition to the ALATA Executive Council, Karen Straub Stanton, Treasurer.  Karen, however, is no stranger to ALATA since she has served on various capacities in the past.  I certainly hope that you as members will make every effort to get to know your officers because we are the representatives for the state and hope to carry out every effort to maintain the recognition that athletic trainers in Alabama truly deserve.

I would like to challenge each and every one of you who have a desire to become active in your state to please do so because we are actively seeking new faces to serve in various capacities at the state level.  If you are interested please do not hesitate to contact any of the officers on the Executive Council.

“Adventure isn’t hanging on a rope off the side of a mountain.  Adventure is an attitude that we must apply to day to day obstacles of life-Facing new challenges, Seizing new opportunities, Testing our resources against the unknown and in the process, Discovering our own unique potential.”-John Amatt.

Please refer to the ALATA Website for up to date information regarding state, district and national news.  If there are any issues or concerns that you may have as a member again please do not hesitate to contact your officers and we will do everything in our power to address your issues and concerns in an expedient manner.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your president, I certainly hope to represent you to the best of my ability.

Sincerely,

BE COUNTED…Get your NPI Number now!

Call for all members to obtain their NPI (National Provider Identifier) number!!!!  In a recent NATA e-blast, all members were reminded of this simple yet vital action we can take to help gain recognition among other allied health care professions.  Although the NATA contest is over, ALATA still maintains this is an important step for all practicing members, regardless of your current setting.

From the NATA Website…

The National Provider Identifier is the result of the mandate in the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) that the Secretary of HHS establish a standard national provider identifier.  Though all healthcare providers will be eligible to receive NPI’s, covered healthcare entities will be mandated to use the NPI as the sole provider identifier on all HIPAA electronic transactions. The 10 digit number will be assigned by a CMS-funded NPI “Enumerator” through the NPPES (National Provider and Plan Enumeration System). The NPI is a numeric 10 digit identifier, consisting of 9 numbers plus a check-digit in the 10th position.  It is accommodated in all standard transactions and contains no embedded information about the healthcare provider that it identifies.

When filling out your application use:
Provider Code 22 (Respiratory, Rehabilitative & Restorative Service Providers)
and Taxonomy Code 2255A2300X (Athletic Trainer)

To apply, go to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/StaticForward.do?forward=static.npistart.  If you have further questions or are in need of greater assistance, please visit the NATA NPI Information website at http://www.nata.org/npi/index.htm

Once you obtain your NPI number, please notify ALATA at jlsaddler@hotmail.com.

Get Involved!  ALATA Searches for New Committee Members

As the new year begins, ALATA is assessing several positions within our organization.  Part if this process includes reviewing committees and committee members to ensure we have the people in place who will strive to stay active and in pursuit of positive strides for our profession in the state of Alabama.  Therefore, over the next few months, we expect to have openings for the driven athletic trainer to step up and make a difference.  If you are one of these driven individuals and would like to volunteer for service, or you know of someone who could fit this profile, please contact the Executive Council at jlsaddler@hotmail.com.  We look forward to serving with you!

Current openings on ALATA committees include:

·        Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee

·        Member to assist with the ALATA Scholarship Committee

·        College & University Athletic Training Students' Committee

·        Clinical/Industrial/Corporate Athletic Trainers' Committee

Please visit www.alata.org for committee listings and to see future opportunities to become active in your state!

ALATA leadership is planning a Hit the Hill

We are planning to Hit the Hill in Montgomery and will need member support.  This is a vital event as the greater our show of support and presence, the larger our voice as legislative matters arise in the upcoming years.  As many of you already know from the national news, legislation can have far reaching and lasting effects on practicing professionals.  Therefore, in order to make our voices heard, please make plans to attend if possible.  If you can not attend, please make sure you stay abreast and active in our and the NATA’s calls for action.

The executive committee is still finalizing dates, times, and event information – stay tuned into www.alata.org for announcements and information.  And as always, feel free to contact Public Relations committee members and/or executive board for information as it becomes available.

Students of Our Profession in Need of Scholarship…

should consider applying for the 2007 ALATA scholarship.  The application deadline is March 31 and applications are available at ALATA.org.  One graduate and one undergraduate award of $1000.00 is up for grabs!  So those of you who are students of the profession, or have students of the profession, you could be this year’s recipient.

If you need additional information and application, please visit www.alata.org or email Paul Crawford at paul.crawford@lcschools.org or Jake Shaw at jakeshaw76@hotmail.com
